Taiwan Mobile (TWM) has been awarded the Top 5% S&P Global ESG Score in the Sustainability Yearbook 2023 on February 8 for the sixth time, out of more than 7,800 companies across 61 industries. This award comes after being selected as one of the top three telecom service providers in the world for six years in a row by DJSI World and it symbolizes the acknowledgment and appreciation of the efforts that TWM has put in place to achieve sustainability.
Daniel Tsai, Chairman of Taiwan Mobile, stated that TWM prides itself on being the pioneer in global ESG and was the first in the industry to upgrade the "Sustainability Development Committee" to the level of board of directors; implement a top-down approach to strengthen sustainability governance; and recruiting international telecommunications professionals to serve as independent directors, taking up more than half of the board seats. While pursuing sustainability, TWM strives to be aligned with global trends and is committed to providing a world-class telecommunications service. It also aims to play a more assertive role in emphasizing the spirit of pursuing sustainability management. Taiwan Mobile is not only the first telecom operator in Taiwan to join RE100, but it is also committed to using 100% renewable energy by 2040 as well as moving towards net zero by 2050. TWM had submitted a commitment to reach that target to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
In line with the global standard of promoting ESG, Taiwan Mobile joined the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) in 2017 with "Taiwan Mobile Green Energy, Sustainable Future" as its motto and served as a board member of GeSI for two consecutive terms. In 2018, TWM introduced practices of the TCFD, taking climate change risks into account when analyzing the possible impact on its finances; and joined the Sustainability Leaders Council (SLC) in 2022, working with 10 to 12 government officials and business leaders across the globe to discuss the solutions for biodiversity issues. To promote a circular economy, TWM has been calling on the public to recycle old mobile phones and has collected 257,000 phones thus far; it also sells Nothing Phone (1), an eco-friendly phone, exclusively through its stores to arouse people's awareness of green consumption.
For six consecutive years, TWM has been promoting "Solar For Good," a charity program focused on green energy. By encouraging the use of renewable energy among both suppliers and consumers, this initiative not only helps to increase the production of clean energy but also supports charitable organizations by providing them with a stable source of income. More than ten thousand people participated in the donation, and the amount raised for the fundraising exceeded NT$28.65 million. Solar energy systems with a total capacity of 524.7 kW have been installed, and it is projected that the systems will generate 11.1 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity and produce a cumulative income of NT$72.85 million over the next 20 years. The carbon reduction exceeded 5,778 metric tons, which is equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of almost 15 Daan Forest Parks. In addition, the initiative also helps six public welfare organizations secure a stable source of income for the next 20 years.
In terms of social aspect, Taiwan Mobile is promoting the “TWM Human OS Upgrade v.2022” program, with the purpose of increasing the starting salary by over 7%, providing an average annual salary of 18 months, and evaluating the abilities of individuals based on their learning potential. TWM offers a range of employee benefits, including the option to work from home or go to the office for ten days per month; up to 77 days of paid leave for pregnant employees during and after their pregnancy; and a childcare allowance of NT$10,000 per year and a maximum welfare of NT$120,000 for parents with children under the age of six.
With the goal of “Embrace Love Through Technology,” TWM has developed more than 20 projects on social participation. During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, TWM collaborated with seven NPOs to initiate two fundraising projects "Educational Tablet Fund Raising Initiative," aiming to provide educational tablets to students living in remote areas so that they could engage in distance learning. As a result of their efforts, a total of 2,257 tablets were donated. Following that, Taiwan Mobile also launched the “Upcycle, Create Possible” project, which called on consumers to recycle their old phones and tablets. This not only extends the life cycle of products but also allows children living in remote and indigenous mountain areas to have the right to digital equality.
