Taiwan Mobile Ranks Among Top 3 in DJSI World Index for 8 Consecutive Years – The Only Telecom Company Globally to Achieve This Honor

December 13,2024

Taiwan Mobile's dedication to sustainable development has once again earned international recognition! In the latest results of the 2024 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), the company ranked among the top three telecom providers worldwide, competing against 170 others. This marks the 8th consecutive year that Taiwan Mobile has been included in the DJSI World Index and the 13th consecutive year in the DJSI Emerging Markets Index. The DJSI serves as a benchmark for corporate sustainability, assessing thousands of companies each year through S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). Only the top 10% of companies in each category qualify for inclusion in the DJSI.

Taiwan Mobile Chairman Daniel Tsai stated that being recognized by DJSI for 13 consecutive years and maintaining a position among the top three globally for eight years is a great honor but also a significant responsibility. The future of our planet depends on the actions taken today. In response to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)’s urgent call for ambitious climate action, Taiwan Mobile is dedicated to actively supporting academic research. Following its support for Academia Sinica’s research on decarbonized hydrogen technology, the company is now focusing on blue carbon research. By leveraging scientific methods to advance research on carbon-negative potential in Taiwan’s mangroves, Taiwan Mobile aims to establish standardized measurement baselines and coefficients for carbon sequestration in Taiwan’s mangroves, thereby advocating marine blue carbon as a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation.

Taiwan Mobile was highly recognized in the 2024 DJSI assessment for its governance practices and economic sustainability. The company has established a board-level “ESG Steering Committee," reflecting its strong commitment to ESG principles. It achieved a perfect score in the “Identification of Material Topics.” In 2023, Taiwan Mobile became the first company to adopt the double materiality approach by considering both financial materiality, which includes the impact on costs, revenue, risks, and opportunities, and impact materiality, which encompasses effects on the economy, environment, and society. By conducting stakeholder forums and online surveys, Taiwan Mobile gathered insights from eight key stakeholder groups and the general public, identifying its top six material issues. These include network quality and coverage, technological innovation, talent development and retention, climate change mitigation and adaptation, green applications and operations as well as customer experience.

In the DJSI assessment, Taiwan Mobile obtained perfect scores in four of the six environmental categories: environmental policy and management, energy management, waste and pollution control, and water resource management, while also achieving high scores in climate strategy and biodiversity. Leading the industry, Taiwan Mobile designated 2023 as its “Year of Biodiversity,” and released Taiwan's first bilingual Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) report in 2024, alongside its ambitious sustainability goals of reaching EV100 targets by 2030, achieving 100% renewable energy usage by 2040, attaining Net Zero by 2050, and realizing a Net Positive Impact. To accelerate progress, the company is collaborating with National Chung Hsing University and Taijiang National Park on mangrove restoration projects, supporting endangered salamander habitat protection with National Taiwan University’s Professor Ju Yu-ten, and working with Blue Trend on an AI Ocean project. Additionally, Taiwan Mobile is investing in and building renewable energy plants, aiming to achieve 35% renewable energy use by 2030 and 60% by 2035.

Taiwan Mobile utilizes AI and ICT to create fraud prevention solutions, which include the initiation of the Anti-Fraud Police and Number Masking services. These initiatives have helped 300 enterprises and 600 public figures detect fraudulent websites, identifying an average of 3,000 scam sites per month and blocking over 90 million scam calls. The company has also protected 24 million e-commerce transactions by securing customer privacy. In terms of employee welfare, Taiwan Mobile emphasizes mental and physical well-being by promoting hybrid work models that allow employees to work from home for up to 10 days each month, while customer service personnel benefit from the Home Agent system that enhances work efficiency. Additionally, the company provides maternity subsidies of NT$120,000, 10 weeks of paid maternity leave, and an Employee Stock Ownership Trust program, fostering a happy and supportive workplace.
