Taiwan Mobile Participates in DwP Global Summit in Portugal to Share Sustainability and Innovation Achievements

July 17,2024

The 2024 Digital With Purpose Global Summit (DwP Global Summit), organized by the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), was held from July 9 to 11 in Cascais, Portugal. The summit brought together over 4,000 representatives from the ICT industry and invited more than 250 global industry leaders to discuss over 70 digital application cases in biodiversity, education, smart cities, and sustainable finance, aiming to implement sustainable development through digital technology solutions. As a long-standing GeSI board member for three consecutive terms (7 years), Taiwan Mobile leveraged the DwP initiative to elevate sustainable development in the ICT industry. Iris Liu, Vice President of Sustainability, Brand Development & PR, attended the DwP Global Summit for the third time as a GeSI board member. On the main stage, she shared insights with GeSI Director Luis Neves and representatives from three other countries on the importance of self-assessing sustainable development using DwP benchmarks aligned with digital applications. Iris's presentation, titled "Open Your AI Ocean," highlighted Taiwan Mobile's use of AI recognition to build a marine biology database, aiding marine conservation teams in data collection. The summit showcased Taiwan Mobile's strong AI technological capabilities, with a video of the AI Ocean project played using Taiwan Mobile's self-developed LIAISE (Language Insert AI Special Edition) platform, which automatically translated the original video's Chinese subtitles and voice into English. Taiwan Mobile's "MyCharge" project received the "Digital with Purpose Smart Cities Award" at the summit's closing ceremony.

The Digital with Purpose Global Awards, organized by GeSI and evaluated by the renowned German research institute Wuppertal Institute, are based on four key criteria: robustness, innovation, scalability, and effectiveness. Awards are given in three categories: education, smart cities, and biodiversity. The "MyCharge" project received high praise from the judges, who noted that future cities not only aim for net-zero carbon emissions but also need to be more inclusive and human-centered. "MyCharge" recognizes user needs and extends telecom technology support and extensive customer maintenance experience to promote charging services, accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles. This contributed to it winning the "Digital with Purpose Smart Cities Award." Global CEO of GeSI, Luis Neves, stated, "The Digital with Purpose awards represent the leading digital innovations solving our biggest sustainability challenges. Taiwan Mobile demonstrated, again, that they are a leader in taking action. Our transition to electric vehicles needs solutions that simplify the user experience for drivers. Taiwan Mobile has achieved this with MyCharge.”

Iris Liu, Vice President of Sustainability, Brand Development & PR, attended the DwP Global Summit as a GeSI board member, delivering a keynote speech on how Taiwan Mobile connects NPOs, social enterprises with public value propositions, and tech-savvy startups to jointly conserve oceans and promote biodiversity. Taiwan Mobile invested in R&D and funding to develop Taiwan's first AI-recognition-based marine biology database, "AI Ocean," in collaboration with marine conservation teams. The database can identify species within 10 seconds with over 80% accuracy, enriching the marine database and benefiting marine conservation research. At the event, Taiwan Mobile's LIAISE platform demonstrated AI technology by automatically translating the original video's Chinese subtitles and voice into English. Additionally, Iris played Taiwan Mobile's authorized support song for the Chinese Taipei team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, "Never Give Up," encouraging global sustainability advocates to persist in their sustainable development efforts.

Aligning with the Paris Agreement, Taiwan Mobile is Asia's first telecom operator to pass the SBTi's 2050 net-zero pathway review under the "1.5°C" scenario. Joining RE100 in 2022, Taiwan Mobile committed to using 100% renewable energy by 2040 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. In 2024, Taiwan Mobile joined the global EV100 (Electric Vehicle 100%) initiative, making four major commitments and two additional actions, becoming the most committed among Taiwan's three EV100 members. Taiwan Mobile also joined the "Fubon Green Energy Investment Platform," partnering with HD Renewable Energy, Fubon Life, and momo to establish "Fubon Energy," planning to invest in 380MW solar photovoltaic systems and 354MW energy storage systems, accelerating renewable energy development and strengthening grid resilience during the energy transition.
