Taiwan Mobile clinches the title as the best telecommunication service provider on the 2021 Dow Jones Sustainability World Indices

November 13,2021

The ranking of the 2021 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) has been revealed. Taiwan Mobile Co., Ltd., with its total score of 91, was named as the best of DJSI world indices in the telecommunication services (TLS) industry.

For five consecutive years, Taiwan Mobile has been included in the highest DJSI World ranking, and for ten consecutive years, it has been a constituent on the Dow Jones Sustainability Emerging Markets Index.

From the 24 criteria in the three aspects of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance), Taiwan Mobile gained the industry's highest score in 13 of them, with 12 scoring full marks. The company exhibited the most outstanding performance in the Environmental Dimension and the Social Dimension, surpassing 98 percent of the world's TLS companies. This signifies that the efforts Taiwan Mobile puts in sustainability have been globally recognized.

"Facing a fast worsening extreme weather across the globe, corporations must propel ourselves to higher standards by putting sustainability into action to achieve a better earth," Taiwan Mobile Chairman Daniel Tsai stated.

"During the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), world leaders have agreed upon the consensus of 'Net Zero' by the middle of this century. Meanwhile, the company's board of directors has also approved the goal to fully use renewable energy by 2040."

"Taiwan Mobile is determined to promote 'Net zero emissions' and 100 percent renewable energy consumption, even if it will cost over tens of billions New Taiwan dollars, as this is the responsibility and dedication a sustainable company must have," Tsai emphasized.

"In response to the impact that climate change will have on the finance of companies, Taiwan Mobile in 2018 introduced a TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure), which has served as the highest standard framework for assessing its climate risk management. The TCFD force has forecast a total cost of more than ten billion New Taiwan dollars in financing green energy, carbon tax and carbon reduction from 2022 to 2030."

"The board of directors has set the tone for the TCFD's content, and the entire company will do its all-out effort to cut carbon emissions by moving on with our suppliers and stakeholders toward the 'Net zero emissions' goal," Tsai pointed out.

An overview of Taiwan Mobile's performance in the DJSI indicates that Taiwan Mobile performed the best in "Innovation Management" in the Governance Dimension, in "Eco Efficiency" in the Environment Dimension and in "Occupational Health and Safety" in the Social Dimension, allowing it to receive excellent marks to rank as the No. 1 company in the TLS industry.

Apart from that, Taiwan Mobile has also scored full marks for three consecutive years in "Materiality," "Policy Influence," "Network Reliability," "Corporate Citizenship and Philanthropy" and "Stakeholder Engagement."

"We are glad to receive the world's recognition in our efforts to pursue sustainability," Taiwan Mobile President Jamie Lin said.

"We shall thank our board of directors and our co-workers for their fullest support and cooperation, so that we can have a holistic and constant improving approach toward each aspect of ESG."

"Taiwan Mobile will continue to 'Think Sustainability, Act Responsible' in a concerted move with all our stakeholders to co-create a sustainable future," Lin said.
