Taiwan Mobile officially soft-launched its 3G services, branded "catch 3! catch your eyes!"

Taiwan Mobile Co., Ltd. (TWM) today officially soft-launched its 3G services, branded "catch 3! catch your eyes!", symbolizing the start of a new era in mobile communications in Taiwan. During the soft-launched period, from today until July 31, 2005, subscribers will be able to receive a free 0987 USIM card by purchasing a 3G handset from one of Taiwan Mobile's direct stores. Handsets available now are Nokia 6680, Sony Ericsson Z800i and Motorola E1000.

During the soft-launch period, subscribers will be able to experience all of 3G data services free of charge. Services currently available include video call, video channel (with over 400+ contents such as movie preview, latest MTVs, etc..), all of the data service under catch 3G portal, and USIM phone book backup. Exclusive contents include real time news from TVBS-N as well as videos, ring-tones, and wall papers featuring 12 top models from "catwalk spot - catch".

The impact to P&L during soft-launch period will be minimal as:
1. Depreciation for 3G equipment will not start until commercial launch
2. Marketing expenses for soft-launch will be limited
3. 3G handset subsidy will only be offered to subscribers entering into 2G acquisition or retention programs
4. 3G handset subsidy amount will be around the same level as 2G/2.5G handset subsidy

Total budgeted 3G capex for 2005 is around NT$4bn, which would put cumulative spending on 3G at NT$8bn. By year end, Taiwan Mobile will have between 2,200-2,600 3G sites covering major metropolitan cities and approximately 70-75% of total Taiwan population. Specific details in regards to 3G tariffs and financials will not be available until commercial launch
